Senior Tech Glossary

Technology comes with a lot of confusing jargon. We've put together this plain-language glossary to help you understand common computer and internet terms - without making you feel like you need a computer science degree.

Browser (Web Browser)

The program you use to look at websites on the internet. Common ones include Google Chrome, Safari (on Apple devices), and Microsoft Edge. Think of it like your window to the internet.

Operating System (OS)

The main software that runs your computer, phone, or tablet. It manages everything. Windows, macOS, iOS (for iPhones), and Android are operating systems.

App / Application

A program designed to do a specific job. For example, a weather app shows you the forecast, and a banking app lets you see your account. On a computer, these are sometimes called 'programs'.

The Cloud

When something is 'in the cloud', it just means it is stored safely on the internet instead of on your physical device. This lets you access your photos or emails from any device, anywhere.

Wi-Fi

A way to connect your devices (like your phone or laptop) to the internet without using cables. It uses radio waves to send the internet signal from a router in your house to your device.

Router / Modem

The little blinking box usually sitting in your living room or study. The modem brings the internet into your house, and the router spreads it around as Wi-Fi so your devices can connect to it.

URL / Web Address

The address you type in at the top of your browser to go to a specific website. For example, 'www.google.com' or 'www.tidelineit.net.au'.

Scam / Phishing

When bad actors try to trick you into giving them money or personal information. They often do this by sending fake emails or text messages that look like they come from your bank, the post office, or even a friend.

Update / Software Update

A new, improved version of an app or operating system. Updates often fix problems, add new features, and most importantly, make your device more secure against hackers. It's usually best to install them.

Reboot / Restart

Simply turning your device completely off and then turning it back on again. It is surprisingly effective at fixing many small, temporary computer problems!

Spam

Junk mail for your email inbox. These are unwanted emails sent in bulk to millions of people. Most email programs have a 'Spam' or 'Junk' folder where these get hidden automatically.

Hardware vs Software

Hardware is the physical parts of a computer that you can touch (like the screen, keyboard, or mouse). Software is the invisible programs and instructions that tell the hardware what to do.
